  • Karen Allan

    Director

    Karen trained and qualified at haysmacintyre, and has since focused on our Financial Services sector working with hedge fund managers, corporate finance boutiques and private equity managers, particularly those entities regulated with the Financial Conduct Authority.

    As well as acting as a principal on audit engagements, Karen has worked with a number of new start-up managers assisting with track record reporting and other procedures. She has built a good relationship with her clients and believes this is what enables her to act in the capacity of a business advisor and not just an audit principal. Keeping in touch and maintaining an interest in the business has allowed her to build these relationships and, given the relative size of the sector, it is always great to bump into clients at regular industry events such as the COO Summit and Emerging Manager Forums. Karen is a key contributor to the sector, arranging internal training and providing editorial content such as articles and insights.

    Karen is a competitive hockey player and loves to travel and experience new countries when she is not visiting her home country, South Africa.

  • Mark Allwood

    Tax Partner

    Mark has over twelve years experience specialising in business taxation and was promoted to partner in 2012. In addition to providing Business Tax advice, Mark jointly manages our business tax department.

    Although he provides solutions to haysmacintyre’s varied client base, Mark's focus is on employee intensive industries and he is heavily involved with our Hospitality and Creative, Media and Technology sector teams. 

    Mark’s key areas of consulting are the design and implementation of employee share options/equity award schemes, investors’ relief planning such as the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS), corporate restructuring, company disposals and acquisitions, shareholder profit extraction including planning for Entrepreneur’s Relief and dealing with international tax matters such as international structuring for group overseas expansion and minimalising the exposure to withholding taxes. 

    He is actively involved with MSI Global Alliance, our worldwide alliance of legal and accounting firms and is a member of their Tax Committee which regularly meets at international conferences to discuss the latest developments, opportunities and threats in international taxation. He believes that an effective tax solution should meet both the short and longer term aims of the shareholders and their company as well as being flexible to accommodate changes as those aims evolve. Mark feels this is only achieved by providing clear, informative and pragmatic advice which identifies the taxation pitfalls and opportunities that invariably arise from each transaction.

    In his spare time, Mark enjoys playing squash and DIY (he is currently searching for his next project) as well as supporting Everton Football Club – the latter being a strange affiliation given he is originally from Somerset! He also has aspirations to become a helicopter pilot.

  • Katharine Arthur

    Partner, Head of Private Client

    Katharine advises individuals, businesses and trusts on all aspects of their tax compliance responsibilities and advisory requirements.

    With a focus on private client issues, Katharine provides practical assistance to clients on a wide range of issues, including:

    • Domicile
    • Residence
    • Individuals coming to and leaving the UK
    • Property ownership, including the recently introduced Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED)
    • Capital Gains Tax

    Her clients also benefit from her advice on:

    • Self employment
    • Partnerships
    • Tax planning
    • HMRC enquiries and International Information Exchange agreements

    She has particular expertise in Inheritance Tax and estate planning as well as UK and offshore trusts, and has established haysmacintyre’s new range of probate services.

    Katharine is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser and is a member of the Taxation Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS). Katharine has previously worked for Big 4 and Top 20 advisory firms.  

    She has often been quoted in the general and tax press, presents at seminars and hopes to translate sometimes overly technical tax issues and opportunities into plain English.

    Away from the office, Katharine enjoys travel, wildlife and photography and combining all three whenever she can.

  • Jane Askew

    Director

    Jane is a Director in our not for profit team. She joined haysmacintyre as a graduate trainee in the audit department in 2008 and has specialised in the not for profit sector since qualifying in 2011. 

    Jane works with a wide variety of not for profit entities and has a particular interest in arts and culture, education and faith charities.

    Jane builds collaborative relationships with her clients and invests time in understanding their activities and mission. In addition to providing her clients with financial reporting and accounting guidance, Jane advises her clients on management reporting, governance, risk management and structure. She has spoken at haysmacintyre seminars and external events and has written articles for the sector press.

    Jane is part of haysmacintyre’s technical and training team and is responsible for designing and delivering regular training courses for our audit staff.

    Outside of work Jane enjoys singing, skiing and sailing. She is a trustee and the treasurer for Colchester Choral Society, which has given her a greater understanding of the challenges her clients face.

  • Andrew Ball

    Partner, Head of Hospitality

    Andrew heads up our Hospitality team and has a wealth of experience in advising hotels, pubs, restaurants, golf courses and private members’ clubs.

    He joined haysmacintyre in 1999 as an audit graduate in the commercial property sector and began working with our hotel clients. This led on to restaurants and bars and so when he became a Partner in 2007, Andrew was the natural choice to head up our Hospitality sector team.

    As well as audit and tax compliance work, Andrew sits on the operational board of a number of his clients to provide consultancy and structuring advice, including corporate strategic planning and financial benchmarking. His other work includes the building of complex financial models for clients that allow them to budget more accurately or consider a new acquisition more carefully.  

    Andrew's team also performs due diligence work for both refinancing and additional bank lending for new projects.

    Many of his clients are owner managed businesses where he is able to provide overall advice that considers the circumstances of both the company and the shareholders. Advice that Andrew strongly believes is not mutually exclusive.

    Andrew is asked to speak at conferences and on panels regularly, including the Propel Info Conference, the UK Hotels Conference and the Boutique Hotels Conference.  

    Outside of work, Andrew is a keen golfer (whose swing is best described as “enthusiastic”) and an avid poker player.
