Smooth proceedings for the first Hospice VAT Refunds

The first VAT returns to be submitted following the changes in April to the rules regarding VAT and hospices have now been submitted, and appear to be being processed by HMRC efficiently. In most cases they are generating inspections due to the amounts being claimed, but these appear to be proceeding smoothly.

The changes introduced on 1 April were the extension of the Section 33 refund procedures to charities whose primary purpose is the provision of palliative care, and whilst the changes do not provide for all VAT to be refunded, they do appear to be achieving the policy objective of providing a substantial amount of additional VAT recovery for organisations operating in this sector.
