At haysmacintyre, we have a dedicated team which includes nine partners and fifteen specialist managers across all diciplines, looking after over 550 charities and not for profit organisations. Our clients encompass all types of charities including fundraising, grant giving and service providing charities. We serve many sub-sectors, including membership charities, schools and academies, clubs and religious charities including orders, dioceses and cathedrals. The inclusion of our multi-disciplinary specialist team in one unit and in one location ensures an integrated and comprehensive approach to our clients’ requirements.

Charities are a very important sector for our firm and represent over 40% of our business. This enables us to be committed to the sector and we produce regular briefings and fact sheets on topical charity matters as well as holding seminars and hosting the Charity Finance Directors Group's VAT Exchange.

our services
Our services are all carried out by specialists and include:

Our audit and assurance services are tailored to suit your specific needs. We ensure our work is effective and efficient by focusing on key issues well ahead of the year-end; this enables us to meet timetables with ease and ensures our work is directed to the key areas. We understand that continuity of personnel is very important, and ensure that you are dealing with people who know you and understand your business. Our role as your auditors provides us with a unique opportunity to spend time with you and in return we will add value to your charity.

Our VAT team is highly experienced in dealing with charities. They have built a strong reputation over many years based advising on complex transactions and on negotiating with the HMRC. We ensure that our advice is comprehensible and practical, as well as technically accurate; and we work with you to ensure the result suits your needs and resources, and is properly implemented.

We provide the compliance support necessary to relieve the regulatory burden and provide a comprehensive advisory service. Our work covers all areas of tax including assisting with the preparation of tax computations and helping structure trading activities to avoid tax problems.

The trading subsidiary companies of charities, and some larger charities falling outside HMRC’s concessionary threshold will need to submit their accounts to HMRC in iXBRL tagged format. We provide an efficient and cost effective tagging service.

Whether you are seeking support for a major and ongoing internal audit process or a relatively small and specific internal audit project, haysmacintyre is able to provide an expert and cost-effective service.

As a result of being one of the leading advisers to the not for profit sector, haysmacintyre can provide a full risk based internal audit programme delivered by experienced staff who know the charity sector.

haysmacintyre has an enormous wealth of external and internal audit expertise which it has used to develop a series of specialist reviews that can be tailored to the particular needs of each client.

Our internal audit reports are structured in such a way as to highlight significant findings and recommendations with easy access to the more detailed information. This saves valuable time and provides clear guidance for trustees and management on what needs to happen to improve each area under review.

Many organisations find it more efficient to use an external payroll service. We provide an efficient and cost effective service for organisations of all sizes from very large entities down to those with just one employee.

There is an increasing level of pressure on charities due to the constant pace of change in the sector. We therefore offer a selection of consultancy services which have been devised especially for charities. These include:
       improving financial reporting
guidance on strategic and operational planning
       governance
       benchmarking
       management of change
       help with mergers
guidance on setting up an internal audit function
liaison with the Charity Commission visits
consideration of your risk assessment process
recruiting key members of your finance team
advising on measuring outcomes and impacts.

We have a dedicated charities consultant, Les Jones OBE, who works with our charity partners and managers to help deliver these services. Les has worked in the charity sector for many years, most recently as Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Finance and Services for WWF. He was also deputy chair of CFDG, a board member of the Charities Consortium and is a treasurer of a number of charities. Les can therefore bring his first hand experience of having tackled many of the issues himself to assist with your issues.

Our company secretarial team provides a complete compliance and advisory service or specific advice on more complex matters as required.

We have a very experienced IT team who are able to discuss technical IT issues with you and assist in sourcing a resolution to problem areas.

These services range from the provision of routine payroll processing to advice on complex employment related issues including PAYE and benefit compliance, provision of health checks, due diligence reviews and managing compliance visits including
negotiating settlements.

Our trust team can undertake all the administration and accountancy services of charitable trusts. The level of support we can provide is flexible depending on the needs of the client. Our services include preparation of accounts to comply with SORP 2005, interim schedules to determine income available for grants, arranging payment of distributions and other expenses, liaising with third parties and providing a day to day point of contact.

We hold regular training courses for Trustees in conjunction with Farrer & Co and CCLA Investment Management. A detailed course programme is available.
