employment status for charities - event overview PUBLISHED IN not for profit

Yesterday we held the first of three seminars entitled employment tax updates for charities. This first session focused on employment status. Joanne Hennessy and Lorraine Owens, our in house employment tax managers were joined by Nick Watson from Stone King Sewell who updated our delegates on the legal side of things.

The events were designed to be an intensive ‘employment tax crash course’ delivering useful and implementable advice and tips within an hour and a half session. Concentration levels were high as the seminar began with Lorraine presenting on employment status through common myths that organizations may experience. The case studies provided some good food for thought. Nick continued the theme, now with a legal focus on the issue, looking at self employed, internship roles, volunteers and agency worker status. Joanne rounded up the session drawing the delegate’s attention to Regulation 72, penalties and mitigation.

The delegates had no hesitation about coming forward with their questions – clearly a tricky area for our contacts, but some interesting discussion points came out of the session. Our next two sessions in September and October focus on “termination packages” and “payments to employees and volunteers” respectively, and are available to book online now.
